Greenhouse Guide FAQ

Is my greenhouse watertight?

No, a greenhouse is not a watertight structure. They will generally allow a small amount of water to enter during heavy rainfall. The design of the roof vents, which hinge directly on the ridge bars, means that water ingress is virtually unavoidable. Your greenhouse is a building that is expected to be filled with plants, either directly into the soil or into containers, therefore it is designed to be tolerant to water from inside and out.

Where should I position my greenhouse?

For a greenhouse to work as designed it has to be placed in a position where it will receive maximum sunlight. If placed in significant shade it will not perform as well as it should. Always try to select best and sunny location, sheltered from the wind as much as possible. If your garden is in an exposed position, then consider the proximity of fencing and hedging and away from overhanging trees. Tall natural hedging or positioning beside a fence are both good ways of shielding your greenhouse from the harsh Irish weather. Please note most greenhouses will take wind proximity of up to approximately 80-90kmph

What surface can I place my greenhouse on?

Depending on the specific type of greenhouse you have, placement options vary. They can either be positioned directly on a lawn, paving slabs, or a concrete base, but it's essential to ensure they are anchored securely to level ground. For instance, if opting to place the greenhouse directly on a lawn, utilize the ground spikes provided with Vitavia Greenhouses. These spikes should be securely cemented into place for stability.

Alternatively, if you're considering a patio slab perimeter base, ensure there's a six-inch allowance outside the frame to facilitate bolting the base securely into position. Additionally, it's advisable to leave a clearance of 18-24 inches around the greenhouse to allow for comfortable movement, as the glazing is typically positioned on the exterior. This extra space provides easy access for maintenance and ensures sufficient airflow around the structure.

Can OutdoorLiving.ie install my greenhouse?

Yes, we have a team of sub-contractors who can assemble nationwide at a time that is convenient to you.

How can I best maintain my greenhouse?

Your greenhouse should be power washed or cleaned with a soft cloth and warm soapy water on a regular basis. Any abrasive brushes or cloths are not advised to be used to avoid scratching polycarbonate or glass panels. Each polycarbonate panel is UV protected both inside and outside and therefore any scratch or damage to these panels will reduce this protection. Ensure that the upper and lower door tracks are cleaned regularly to avoid a build up of debris.

How can I best protect my greenhouse?

Keep doors and air vents closed during windy conditions. Condensation will appear on your greenhouse each day in damp conditions. To allow the greenhouse to dry out and let air filter through, the doors and vents should be opened regularly. During heavy snowfall, clear the roof of the building or take suitable measures to support the roof.
