Create your Ideal Outdoor Space

We asked our in-store OutdoorLiving.ie experts what their top tips would be for creating that perfect outdoor space. Whether you are planning a perfect spot for entertaining guests or want to create a relaxing area where you can unwind, it is essential to define the use of your garden before you make any decisions on materials, gazebos, outdoor furniture etc.

Here are our top five tips to get you started in creating an idyllic space for your needs.

Beautifully Designed Garden

1. Make that wish list

What features would make your perfect outdoor living space – an outdoor kitchen or BBQ, a gazebo or pergola? Be realistic and practical. Once you have a good idea of what you want, you can start looking for products and materials that will help you achieve your vision. It is essential to identify your core needs for this space, whether it’s a children's play area, family dining space, vegetable garden or lounge seating area. Setting a budget is top of the agenda and will allow you to determine what can be achieved within both the budget and space that you have.

2. Consider the aspect of your outdoor space

If you’re a sun lover, then consider designing the seating area to follow the sun at different times of the day. Maybe a bistro set for that morning coffee in an east-facing area and for later in the day a lounge set or bench for early evening sun. If you prefer the shade, then place your family dining space in a shadier spot out of direct sunlight.

3. Use lighting to create an atmosphere

When selecting outdoor lighting, consider the overall design of your space and the purpose of the lighting. For example, if you have a large open space, you may want to use a combination of both path lighting and accent lighting to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. A well-designed lighting scheme draws the eye outside to enjoy your garden’s features, adding an enjoyable new perspective as dusk falls. Lighting up pathways with solar lighting or hanging festoon lighting along a wall or pergola are easy and budget friendly ways of mastering this effect.

4. Create some focal points

Whether it’s a seating area or an outdoor structure, having a garden focal point is what gives your landscaping some purpose. A focal point will draw the eye towards it, making sure all of the attention is on your favourite features and away from less attractive areas. They should be strategically placed to enhance the overall design of the space. When selecting your focal spot, consider the surrounding landscape and how it will complement the design. For example, a water feature may work well in a lush, tropical garden, while a sculpture may be better suited to a more modern landscape. Water features, hanging chairs or even your garden shed are great ways of defining space. Patios and decking areas can also be focal points in themselves but adding a pergola or gazebo can also create definition and shelter.

5. Low maintenance

means more time to relax in your outdoor space! Low-maintenance materials are essential for creating a beautiful outdoor space that is easy to maintain. When selecting materials consider products that are durable, weather-resistant, and require minimal upkeep. One of the best ways of achieving this is by creating a patio garden which requires little maintenance compared to a lawn. Artificial grass and composite decking are both family and pet friendly options. Arbours, pergolas and gazebos are also a great addition to any low maintenance area by creating a shaded spot for sunny weather and a sheltered space when the weather is not at its best.
